Volvo C30 for US Drivers in 2008

Volvo Cars of North America announced in late 2006 that it will bring the Volvo C30 to the U.S. market no earlier than the 2008 model year. But this year you can see the model at NAIAS, here in Detroit. The Volvo stand oozes Scandinavian cool and self-assured design cues. The XC60 Concept is the star of the stand. Volvo’s Strategic Manager, Brand Communication, Christer Johansson says of the car, “it’s easy to say yes or no to an idea on paper, or a Powerpoint presentation. But you can’t delete an experience. When you can touch something and see it, it’s a very persuasive argument.” And audience reaction suggests the crowds are indeed persuaded.

That persuasive design closely marries the concept with reality. “This could be the C30-owner’s next car. Equally sporty and exciting, but far more capable. The concept car offers a good indication of how the ‘real’ XC60 will look,” says Fredrik Arp, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. Volvo’s XC60 project is aimed at a specific target group with high demands on design, brand value and high-tech solutions in their choice of lifestyle products. So is the road-worthy C30.

Volvo knows C30 drivers regard the microchip as a natural complement to their breakfast cereal. C30 drivers have grown up in an era during which electronic products have undergone unimaginable development. To get those younger buyers interested, the edgy design of the C30 features a unique frameless glass tailgate, a confident stance and the broad shoulders that have become a Volvo design hallmark.

“The C30 has plenty of muscles in a sporty and compact package,” noted Volvo Car’s Design Director Steve Mattin. “Anyone who recalls the Volvo SCC (Safety Concept Car) or the classic P1800ES will recognize the exclusive and convenient rear tailgate. The distinctive tail lamps ensure that no one will be uncertain about which car they are following.” And putting 218 horsepower to the front wheels, the new C30 is powered by a turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine that produces 236 pound-feet of torque.

The C30 is a surprisingly attractive car. The exterior look is very pleasant, and the interior is very comfortable. Although the center console is not much different from the S40, however it is really surprising to find so much things equipped in such a small car. The rear seats are very comfortable, unfortunately it can only fit 2, but it is not a concern at all. Very roomy even for 2 adults. Haven't got the chance to test drive it yet, but I'm already loving it. :)

The S80 looks great, and definatly has the style to compete in its price range. the other models (S40,C30,C70) on the other hand do not fair well against competion from BMW,Mercedes, Lexus, etc. even close up the interior ( which is shared among these models) has the look and feel of a much less expensive car. while in the case of the S40,C30 this might be forgiven, in the C70 which is over $ 40k (US) it is unaccepatble. a resikin of the older C70 would have been preferable to this car.

The new C30 looks awesome and is priced to make a killing....until you look at the options list. I can't wait for the C30 to go on sale, but I think they blew it with the standard features on the C30 2.0 model. They add a body kit, some pretty awesome looking 18" wheels, a dynamic chassis, aluminum inlays, and the Dynaudio system, but they forgot to add practical things you would expect when you order the next expensive model; things like electronic climate control, a power driver seat, trip computer, and (this is the really stupid part because even a cheap Focus has...get ready for it...) cruise control, are options and not standard equipment. If you buy an S40 and you order the T5 instead of the 2.4i you get all of those things AND a bigger engine. Sure, what it does come with makes it look, handle, and sound better...but it's missing a few basic practicalities that add another $1000 right away, especially because you can bet you won't find a C30 2.0 without them in your local Volvo dealer's lot. If there's one thing that bothers me about Volvo, it's the standard interior equipment, and the boxes you have to check to get some of it. Is an auto-dimming mirror too much to ask for in a car that costs $30,000? Take a look at Acura and you'll see what I mean. Seriously....why is cruise control optional on ANY Volvo?
I love the styling and the fact that it rips to 60 in a little over 6 and a half seconds, but Volvo is killing me with their options list. And please offer AWD at some point, because as much fun as it is to smoke the front tires when the light turns green I'd rather have the better handling and security of AWD when I'm zipping around town.

I have seen the Volvo C30 commercials and I love it! Can't wait until this beauty lands in Canada. I am in the process of purchasing a new car but "good things come to those who wait"!
Kudos to your designing team!
all the best

The C30 is so long overdue!!! Looks Beautiful. Oddly enough, saw a rare sight recently, the 1800ES the C30 is styled after.
All I can say is; IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! If the reviews are an indication of what will hit the street, I Can't wait for the US release. Hurry Up!!
