Cleveland Auto Show, Feb 28-Mar 08 »Volvo Cars of North America announced in late 2006 that it will bring the Volvo C30 to the U.S. market no earlier than the 2008 model year. But this year you can see the model at NAIAS, here in Detroit. The Volvo stand oozes Scandinavian cool and self-assured design cues. The XC60 Concept is the star of the stand. Volvo’s Strategic Manager, Brand Communication, Christer Johansson says of the car, “it’s easy to say yes or no to an idea on paper, or a Powerpoint presentation. But you can’t delete an experience. When you can touch something and see it, it’s a very persuasive argument.” And audience reaction suggests the crowds are indeed persuaded.
That persuasive design closely marries the concept with reality. “This could be the C30-owner’s next car. Equally sporty and exciting, but far more capable. The concept car offers a good indication of how the ‘real’ XC60 will look,” says Fredrik Arp, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. Volvo’s XC60 project is aimed at a specific target group with high demands on design, brand value and high-tech solutions in their choice of lifestyle products. So is the road-worthy C30.
Volvo knows C30 drivers regard the microchip as a natural complement to their breakfast cereal. C30 drivers have grown up in an era during which electronic products have undergone unimaginable development. To get those younger buyers interested, the edgy design of the C30 features a unique frameless glass tailgate, a confident stance and the broad shoulders that have become a Volvo design hallmark.
“The C30 has plenty of muscles in a sporty and compact package,” noted Volvo Car’s Design Director Steve Mattin. “Anyone who recalls the Volvo SCC (Safety Concept Car) or the classic P1800ES will recognize the exclusive and convenient rear tailgate. The distinctive tail lamps ensure that no one will be uncertain about which car they are following.” And putting 218 horsepower to the front wheels, the new C30 is powered by a turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine that produces 236 pound-feet of torque.
I love the styling and the fact that it rips to 60 in a little over 6 and a half seconds, but Volvo is killing me with their options list. And please offer AWD at some point, because as much fun as it is to smoke the front tires when the light turns green I'd rather have the better handling and security of AWD when I'm zipping around town.
Kudos to your designing team!
all the best
