I'm not a real big fan of the styling....its not repulsive but in the same turn its not very attractive.....I've driven both the old and the new and the new is definitly better. The dash controls mimic a typewriter is my big complaint on the interior. A real overhaul is due soon I am sure. I really wish you guys would use the new Kuga as a basis---or just replace it with the Kuga.....

I liked the redesigned exterior of the Escape when I saw it at the Pittsburgh Auto show last Spring, but was not impressed by its interior. Too much cheap looking plastic! C'mon Ford! With all the interesting composite materials out there you couldn't create a more stylish interior? I also agree with previous comments that the 4 speed tranny and rear drums have got to go. A shame because I seriously would consider buying one. I think that they are pretty competitively priced for the market. A word to FoMoCo- the dealership that displayed your vehicles at the Pittsburgh show did you no favors. The display looked very sloppily put together and many of the vehicles had areas such as rear hatches locked or no power in vehicles to check out interior lighting/dash displays. I saw many people walking away from Ford's area shaking their heads ... and not in a good way.

Why is the new Escape SLOWER than the outgoing one? (V6) The styling (I think) is better and the dash layout seems to be more thought out though I think the plastic quality could be higher. I have considered and recomended the old Escape but I couldn't buy or recomend this because the new Escape is out handled and outpaced by the older model, the annoying thing is Ford has the great new Duratec 35 and the 6-Speed as has been mentioned. It's not fair for the former class leader to be treated this way, the Escape deserves better and I hape it will get it soon.
P.S. Nice SVT idea, I miss them.

I totally agree my sister had the older model with the V6 and I love to drive that thing. It made me want one. I would love to get the new model with the increased power in the 09 model but even then, like you said it is so plastic ridden. The darker interior hides the that better. My list of improvments would include changing the back hatch to be a tail gate w/ a power down window. A tail gate would make camping and runs to the Lowes a snap even without a truck bed, for items like taller trees.

I'm an owner of a 2005 ford escape XLS 2.3 4x4, and although I love it's styling I have to say the new one is growing on me.(Hey! kudos on the '05's hideously bland/lame hard plastic interior, I love it! It's really low maintenance, who cares what others think!) The only suggestion I have is: Either drop the duratec 35 in it or place the Mazda MZI 2.3 turbo from the Speed3 in to make it an SVT ( 6 speed and keep it an AWD too). All the parts are there and so is the market for it, so why not? Or like how Alan Mually puts it "Why can't we...?"

Definitely, needs rear discs, are we in the 70's or something?
Henry should wake up and smell the coffee, whats with an outdated 4 spd tranny? That should be at least a 5 spd. C'mon people.
Also, needs more selection of colours, like that new burnt orange or a nice metallic copper. The primary colours just don't cut it as
they once did.
Ford is definitely headed in the right direction, I chose this one over the '06 CR-V and the '06Santa Fe (all same price range).
The big factors that took me over were ;4 cylinder easy to work on and easy on gas, 6 air bags (santa fe has 2), anti roll, abs,
traction, and quiet ride (unlike noisier CRV).
Don't forget all these vehicles cost more or less the same to operate, if one looses and little more in depreciation, the other will loose
more thru the gas tank and maintenance, you can't win the money game. Not unless your neighbor leaves you one of these late model suv's
in their estate.
The second choice here was the 06 Santa Fe like my wife's. Beautiful, strong, reliable excellent quiet handling, takes alot of weight to sink the rear end down (kinda like the wife) but hard on gas, no anti roll (doesn't need it), no traction control ,and no side bags at all (kinda like my wife).
Good luck choosing.

It's sad that Ford would even consider bringing to production a redesign that is this dated. The exterior styling is so-so. It would be light years better without the tacky chrome or dollar store keypad on the doors. The real tragedy is the 4-speed manual transmission. The competition is moving towards 6-speeds and beyond, yet this fresh Ford is using 80's technology here. Sad...

I know I would definately buy a new bronco based off the original if it had solid axles and a stout drivetrain, but i would never buy an escape.
I enjoy my ford, but I honestly do not know what Ford is thinking when it comes to design these days. I'm not sure i would buy another one, simply because of the way they look. The two things that turn me off the most are the oversized slatted grills( looks like ford forgot to design the front of the car so they just nailed a fence on the front to keep things out) and the Dub wheel styling. Sure, aftermarket wheels are popular and profitable, but that is because its a personal choice. If you want to tackle that market just look at the Scion, though it pains me to say it.

Pretty cool looking vehicle. However I find two things wrong with it 1. is the radio part of the console/dashboard. In the versions without the Navigation systems that area is a little bland. There is no actual radio face like in other vehicles there is a slot of the cds and control buttons but no display in that area the display from what I have seen is above it on top of the dash. All the controls for the heating and ac are in the same area as the radio and on all on the same plate. I also don't like seeing the name Escape everywhere. I am alright with it on the tailgate but imprinted on the front bumper and glove box area not so much at least it isn't imprinted on the tailgate and threshold plates like the F-series trucks are.

I do like the tail lights definitely better than the previous yrs for those that install equipment for police/muncipal vehicles. The headlights are alright kinda like an Explorer liked the older style better. I like the overall outside design over the older ones, but not sure what to think of the interior too Rubbermaid outdoor storage container for me.
