Mazda Ryuga Concept

Flow—nagare is Japanese for flow; ryuga is “gracious flow”—was the theme for the unveiling of the Mazda Ryuga Concept. Laurens van den Acker, Design Division General Manager for Hiroshima, Japan’s Mazda Motor Corporation, described the evolution of this idea, based on the new design theme that began with the Nagare concept car unveiled at the LA Auto Show, November 2006.

“The Mazda customer is young at heart, progressive, and tech-savvy,” van den Acker said. “The Ryuga concept embodies ideas of harmony, nature, and beauty, but it fits completely with modern technology.”

Some key design features include side surfaces inspired by karesansui (Japanese dry gardens) and a headlamp shape inspired by the flow of morning dew dropping from bamboo leaves. Advanced LED and fluorescent tube technology will enable such a striking design to be used on a production vehicle in the foreseeable future.

The 21-inch wheel spokes – different on the left and right sides – are slightly twisted as if they’re delivering torque. To convey the feeling of gas turbine blades, the trailing edges of the wheel spokes are accented with a tinge of body color.

Yasushi Nakamuta was the chief designer for this project and designer of the highly successful third generation 2006 MX-5 Miata.

ummmm........what the heck is going on over there at the Mazda design group? I understand it is a concept---but no need to tail off into a direction no one is headed. Mazda's current designs are cool.......keep it in that vein somewhat.......this thing is way to Sci-fi for normal Joe. Another $500 mill wasted I'm sure.

MAZDA NEEDS TO GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD ON THIS ONE! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? THIS HAS "CHICK CAR" WRITTEN ALL OVER IT. REAL MEN WANT REAL CARS AND THIS ISN'T EVEN CLOSE. MAZDA NEEDS TO COME OUT WITH A NEW RX-7. THE RX-8 IS "OK" BUT THATS ABOUT IT. I WOULDN'T BUY ONE. MAZDA NEEDS TO DO IT RIGHT WITH AN AGRESSIVE STANCE, LOTS OF HORSEPOWER AND LOTS OF TORQUE. HORSEPOWER IS GREAT AND ALL BUT IT HAS TO COME IN THE RIGHT PACKAGE. BY THAT, I MEAN IT HAS TO LOOK FAST. THIS CAR JUST LOOKS A LIKE A GLAMOROUS NEON!

MAZDA RYUGA CONCEPT- The front end of the car looks really fine, the rest of it needs more work. Gull wing doors are really kind of outdated, they went along time ago with Mercedes 300 SL Coupe back in the late 50s. Not practical for getting in or out of a passenger vehicle. When looking at the side view of this vehicle it similar to the GM Volt, the rear wheels might as well be out in the open, the body appendage on the rear doesn't offer much protection at all. The Ryuga isn't alone, there are other concept vehicles that have this same situation.

Mazda concept cars are usually a little funky, but their products are always (except for Tribute; it does not fit into the current "Zoom Zoom" design lexicon) sporty, purposeful, and attractive. I currently drive a 2004 Mazda3 and I love it! The lines and style of the exterior make this car a standout in the compact class. Keep up the good work and keep the great designs coming!
Speaking of design triumphs, the redesigned Mazda2 is a knockout and would provide a sporty alternative to B segment cars such as the Aveo, Fit, Versa, Accent, Yaris, and Rio. I think it would be a great addition to the "Zoom Zoom" lineup of cars in the U.S., especially with our currently outrageous gas prices.

Rich says (May 3, 2007 at 8:51 am):
Lose the smiley face on the front of it...the rest of the body lines flow quite well.
gabriella magglio says (April 26, 2007 at 2:33 pm):
 MAKE THIS CAR..ITS BEAUTIFUL.
Brian says (April 25, 2007 at 11:33 pm):
Looks neat, but I'm nervous about those doors. The way they look, I'd guess you'd hafta look for certain parking spots so you're not tightly parked between two others and hitting them with these doors. But maybe I'm wrong, maybe they open up closer to the car than it looks from the pictures.

it certaintly looks interesting but i dont think i would want one in my garage. it looks aerodynamic and i like how the wheels are all the way out at the corners. i guess i like the overall shape and proportions but not the details. a production car based on this could look really nice.
tannia thompson says (April 17, 2007 at 6:45 pm):
