After presenting three ground-breaking concept vehicles during the 2005-2006 global auto show season – Sassou, Senku and the Kabura, which won Detroit Motor Show’s esteemed Aesthetics and Innovation Award at the 2006 North American International Auto Show – the 2007-2008 Auto Show Season continues with the introduction of Mazda’s design and surface language called Nagare. Pronounced “na-ga-reh” this vehicle was revealed at the Greater Los Angeles International Auto Show and is the first of a series of design concepts that Mazda will showcase this global auto show season.

Under the direction of Mazda’s new global design director, Laurens van den Acker, the challenge given to the team was to invent a novel means of registering motion in vehicles whether they’re moving or still. Nagare, which means flow in Japanese, achieves that goal while also signaling a fresh design direction for future Mazda vehicles.

Franz von Holzhausen, Mazda North American Operations’ (MNAO) Director of Design, and the man responsible for leading the US-based design team, which developed this vehicle, explains, “We’re looking well down the road with Nagare. We want to suggest where Mazda design will be in 2020. To do that, we redefined basic proportions and the idea of driving without losing the emotional involvement. Mazda’s driving spirit will be enhanced and intensified by Nagare.

Yowza, that's sharp. I wish all cars on the road looked as futuristic as this. Reminds me of the cars on that old British sci-fi show, UFO.

A few question 1. Why is it none of these fantastic looking cars ever make it to market we see them every year and yet all we get is boxy "looks like last years model" cars? 2. This is the year 2007 so when is the "futuristic look" ever going to be present day what exactly are all of you car manufacturers waiting on? 3. As quoted from the Hakaze page “This is the closest to a production vehicle that we have in the series,” Birtwhistle says. “Compact SUVs like this,” he says of the Hakaze, “might not be what Americans are thinking about right now, but they’d do well in Europe.” how many "real American" people did you ask because I have asked everyone I know 'PS I live in cowboy country where every other vehicle is a rusted pickup truck' and not one person said no way I would ever buy something like that every last one of them just thought WOW thats cool wish they really made those and it was a truck lol. Its just to bad you have all this tallent in the designs but the only way we get to see the real thing is in concept cause before it goes to production you gotta take the awsome Hakaze and turn it into the lame CX9 that looks like a slightly different 2006 CX7.

very nice, except it seems the designers are using full bodies in their designs, where if they used modular panels and doors or two part cars where the xtra weight can be left at home, when only one person is using the vehicle, such as single trips.there are many modular designs i have seen and that might be the furture.such as removable rear doors, and easy remove rears when not needed to aid fuel effecitency and accelleration.even the second half of the car could be left at home when 2 seats are needed[modualr 2 door converts to 4 door when needed

The streamline paint is mesmerizing, they even hide the Mazda muffler to enhance the paint and the shape of the car. It's a small thing but I hope it shows up in production on something. There are too many metallic-dirt colored cars and not enough stripes these days...

Pretty "out there" to be honest.. Too round for my person likes, but I must say it has duel purpose, one as a car and another as a conversation starter.

MBM says (January 26, 2007 at 12:20 pm):
I've really enjoyed the last few rounds of Mazda concept cars, and I wanted to praise the designers for their vision and imagination. Starting with the Kabura, these latest concepts from Mazda have the personality and forward thinking that's so obviously lacking from most other manuracturers. Just to be clear, I will happily drop my deposit off at the local dealership for the next affordable Mazda model that builds on the Kabura, the Nagare, or the Ryuga. And just as a tip, the average US income is still in the $30k - $40k range, while the average cost of a house is over $230k. As a result, the auto manufacturers who will succeed, are those that keep building affordable cars, as Mazda largely has. Thanks for the two Mazdas in my garage. I look forward to replacing the 1992 I've had since new in a couple of years.
