Tristan Eaton has found another prominent medium to express his creativity – the ‘Cool Lid’ of the new Ford Flex on display at the New York International Auto Show.

Flex, the new Ford utility, is Eaton’s latest inspiration. The 29-year-old urban artist, known for his street art and as founder of the creative agency and toy brand ThunderDog Studios, is using large sheet-metal stampings of the unique Flex white suede-colored roof as his canvas. Created right in front of showgoers on the Ford stand, the large pieces of ‘urban roof art’ will go on display in Ford’s Flex Studio Gallery. Eaton follows in the footsteps of renowned customizers, Chip Foose and Funkmaster Flex, who have already worked their magic to explore the customizing possibilities for the new vehicle.

“Tristan Eaton’s art is as fresh and provocative as the new Flex,” said Usha Raghavachari, Ford Crossover Utility Vehicle marketing communications manager. Ford’s new Flex starts arriving in dealerships this summer and offer eight two-tone roof options featuring two contrasting light roof colors – White Suede and Brilliant Silver.

Eaton began pursuing street art as a teenager, painting everything from urban billboards to dumpsters.
He designed his first toy for Fisher Price at age 18 and has since become a driving force in the world of designer toys. Eaton founded ThunderDog Studios in 2003. The Queens studio is a prominent player in branding, illustration and fine-art-based urban toy development.

This Flex is both boxier than a Range Rover and Uglier than Scion's newest xB. Do we need another "BOX"?
Austin says (April 17, 2008 at 6:46 pm):
This is indeed an amazing vehicle. Yet the name the Ford Flex does not really seem to fit it. I was think the FORD FANATIC might suit it better an amazing eye catching car....with a ear catching name... just a thought. -your fan austin

I really think this style vehicle is a valid solution to hum-drum minivans. I will be hard pressed not to purchase one after I view it at the dealership. I am currently planning on buying the Transit Connect when it comes out but this kind of vehicle is hard to resist. Just dont ruin it like Scion did with their box-mobile. A different "Non F-Name" nomenclature would definitly help.... Please fire the idiot in charge of naming vehicles......I bet he makes 500 grand a year to pick the worst imaginable names.....beyond that it looks like a winner!!! However, I'm sure the idiotic automotive press will slam it somehow ..... because after all .........it is an American vehicle.......if it doesnt have a BMW or Toyota badge......its pretty much worthless in their book.

I really think this should replace the slow selling Ford Taurus X.
Andrew J Smith Jr says (March 24, 2008 at 4:15 pm):
IN addtion to seeming to be a great people car, it may work to carry my dogs. I have two Great Danes (10 month and 10 weeks) They will be tall dogs (37 at the shoulder) I need to know the headroon, the dimension from the flat surface produced by folding the seats flat to the interior roof. I have made several calls to Ford and no one seems to have access to this figure. I even took my tape measure to the KC Auto Show but since the Flex was on a special display I could not get the measurement. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andrew BTW -- I'm greatly impressed with all that I see in the Flex when checking the web site.

I don't quite understand what's happening here. I have heard some people say that the Flex looks similar to the new Interceptor concept, but I definitely don't see it. The Flex, a clearly uninventive and bulky design, is going to production, while the Interceptor, a modern and obviously culturally significant design, is still on the backburner, and probably won't see production until it has been substantially modified. The market for inefficient SUV's (or crossovers or whatever other silly nomenclature they've now found themselves in need of hiding behind), is almost done for, and has been for some time. The only potential customers are upper middle class families. And only those who don't think this is a boxy wreck. The market for large sedans has only seen a recession as of late due to uninventive and boring design, but obviously has potential as shown by the 300's sudden success. Should this car go into production it would no doubt steal many of the 300 customers, win new customer's through its modern looks, and gain a great new following from law enforcement. Produce before it's too late, and Chev just steals some of the design cues for themselves! (Just like they did with the grill from the superchief concept that took too long to be implemented on standard Ford truck models, but was almost immediately implemented on Chev's redesigned trucks. For shame. Shame on you, shame on them, shame on everyone.) Long story short . . . just fix up the obvious visibility issues, put a normal hood on it (like THAT's ever going into production?!) and show the world a real car with new ideas . . . not more and more of the same that this Flex offers.
