At the 2008 Chicago Auto Show Ford unveiled new “smart” features for truck customers, announcing a collection of industry-exclusive technologies for F-Series trucks and commercial E-Series vans. Ford Work Solutions will be available this fall on the 2009 F-150, F-Series Super Duty, and E-Series vans. Transit Connect vans will join Ford’s commercial vehicle lineup with this technology in mid-2009.

Ford Work Solutions delivers four innovative features:
• An in-dash computer developed with Magneti Marelli and powered by Microsoft Auto that provides high-speed Internet access via the Sprint Mobile Broadband Network and navigation by Garmin. It’s the first broadband-capable in-dash computer in production. This allows customers to print invoices, check inventories and access documents stored on their home or office computer networks or from the job site.
• Tool Link, a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) asset tracking system developed
in partnership with DEWALT, and ThingMagic, the industry expert on embedded RFID technology. This enables customers to maintain real-time inventory of the tools or equipment stored in the pickup box.
• Crew Chief, a fleet telematics and diagnostics system, which allows small fleet owners to efficiently manage their vehicles, quickly dispatch workers to job sites and keep detailed vehicle maintenance records.
• Cable Lock security system developed in partnership with Master Lock®, the industry-leading lock manufacturer, to discourage theft of expensive tools too large to fit in the cab.

Ford Work Solutions features were developed through hands-on research with contractors and skilled tradespeople in multiple markets around the U.S.

James Augustein says (April 30, 2008 at 10:58 pm):
Here's the problem with the Ford Work Solutions being "affordable technologies" the price for all these in a package is going to be over 5K most estimate closer to 10K. Yeah the little gagets are cool but honestly why bother, it's just another way for for to milk us for every last cent. Now as for the comment on how ford needs to bring back the 7.3, I don't see that happening any time soon. The 7.3 can and does outlast any other deisel on the market but it lags the stump pulling power of the 6.4. If they can implant the same technology into the 7.3 that they have in the 6.4 then they would rule the heavy duty market forever.

This is an exceptional step forward for the work truck. Asset control is big, and the losses are staggering. If this can save just one tool a year it will more than pay for itself. Wow.
David says (February 7, 2008 at 9:27 pm):
Ford Work Solutions is a great idea. This should be, if it is not, offered in every F-series truck, E-Series van, and any other commercial vehicle. The only improvemet is that the printer should be factory installed somewhere out of the way. As an option, of course.
