The Ford Edge is a very hard car to like, and at the same time a very hard car to dislike. On the positive side, it has great exterior styling, roomy interior, and nice features including it being the perfect size most crossover buyers want. On the negative size, many interior features are just too plastic-y and downright cheap looking for a vehicle in this price class. The seats are very comfy and look great in leather, but the cloth seats material are about as sumptuous as the seats in a Czech built Tatra of the 1960’s. Also, while the 18″ and 20″ wheels look fantastic, the lower aspect ratio on the tires generate a ride that is more like a harsh, rough riding sports car, not a family vehicle. As a former owner of a Chrysler built crossover, I find the mileage rating on the Edge to be terrible. I have 4 friends and business associates that own Edges and all of them complain that 24mpg highway is impossible to achieve, and that in city driving, none of them can get 16 mpg. I don’t know how the stated mpg ratings are determined, but I have yet to meet anyone that obtain the stated mileage figures. My 5 year old Pacifica consistantly got 24 - 26 mpg on the highway, and when combined with my city driving, I got a consistant 22 mpg overall - the Edge, built 5 years later, can’t even approach that. Why, Ford? Trust me, I would have loved to get a new loaded Edge with leather, but in today’s world, the mpg rating is just too bad. Improve that, Ford, and I think the new Edge will sell much better, and be more accepted by the critics. And improve the cloth interior to be not so Yugo-like.

Edge looks cool - but where is the 3rd row seat? Also you’ve really do new a hybrid or even better - one of those new european deisels with the 60 mpg - I know it would get less in a crossover - but 35 - 40 mpg would make this a killer vehicle.

Foregt bailout - just get the european deisels approved for the US. Ford sales would double.

Moms are looking for crossovers with seating for seven, good fuel economy and room for the kids and their friends. C’mon FORD!

I own a 2007 Prius but I drove an EDGE yesterday. The Edge is a much better and cool looking crossover than the Escape. If it was a hybrid I would trade in my Chrysler right now-c’mon Ford get with it

I own the Edge now (2007) and love it but it’s a lease which runs out next year…will I keep this car or get another Edge…probably not. The gas mileage isn’t that great and, like everyone above, would love a hybrid or electric version also…get with it Ford!!!! I have never owned a foreign car but the Toyota Prius is very tempting

What a joke! This vehicle weighs in excess of 4,000 LBS and their answer to sell more vehicles is to ADD more unsprung weight? The reason you would increase the size of a wheel is to reduce the height of the sidewall to make a tire corner more effectively. This is nothing more but a silly marketing gimick to cover up the poor choices that Ford has in fuel efficient vehices. I have owned three Fords and am turning in my F-150 on Saturday and NOT buying another Ford. The dealership and owner experience is terrible.

I currently own an EDGE. I enjoy the car very much However, I wish the designers payed more attention to the driving visibility of this car. Head rest placement and angle of rear window make it difficult to view the areas behind lending this car to major blind spots. I have adjusted the mirrors numerous times to find that I can’t get a real comfortable driving position. The fact that we need RPA on these vehicles lends itself to the designers chosing form over function in this area.

I have a new ‘08 Edge. First thing I did was remove the rear headrests so as to improve rear visibility. If you can’t do it yourself the dealer will for free.

I’d also like a hybrid Edge but turning in a car, no matter what the gas mileage, is not cost-effective.
I looked at the Aptera….be serious! Anyone who

I am looking into buying Ford Edge. I really want a hybrid, but my concern is this. I’m told mechanics don’t even know yet how to service these vehicles.
Also, new batteries are 4,000.00- so you really wouldn’t be saving anything if fuel cost is a concern. I am actually more concerned with the environment.
Are they making Edge hybrid yet? I have a Ford escape now, but uncomfortable for travel.

The batteries on new hybrids are guaranteed for 10 years and one could purchase additional maintenance warranties.
Also, Toyota dealers know how to work on their cars.

I’ll agree on the comments about hybrid or diesel. When Lexus came out with their luxury RX400H several years ago, other companies like Ford should have been watching and acting. Now, they’re catching up. Very sad.

I will add my voice to the flood of concerned drivers—-we need more choices in fuel and we need them NOW! This is a gorgeous comfortable safe car, suitable for families, couples or individuals. An engine change to electric or even hybrid

I really would like to add my two cents, but from a “disabled” stand point. I tried about 18 types of vehicles and NONE comppared to the Edge for comfort and accessabliity.( I broke my scaula into 41 pieces and lose the use of my right arm forever) All other car companies make the lumber so hard I am unable tosit at all. I have gone back to sit in the Edge and LOVE every minute in it. When you lose use of one arm totally, you realize how very important have everything nearby is. I am waiting to take a “handicap driving access test” just so that I will be able to get the Edge in a Hybrid. I have read on here that they are converting one plant already for it and it is said to coem out in 2010 model year. I want an edge so badly. The gas mileage is still not worth me trading my expedition in. The big fat cat is paid for and I would rather pay for the gas than have a car payment too.

I really want the Ford Edge, but I will not purchase one unless it is a hybrid. All gas engines on any vehicle now just doesn’t make sense.

I have to have a hybrid for all of the driving i would need to do for work. I hope that i don’t have to get the toyota highlander (which is already in a hybrid), i would much rather have the edge.

I waited for the 2009 models to buy a Ford Edge, because Ford offers the Escape in a Hybrid, so certainly Ford would know that the Edge would sell better in a Hybrid. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!! I also would like the front passenger seat to fold down w/out having to purchase the leather seat option. I will wait until the 2010 models come out to see better fuel efficiency in the Edge. The vista roof is a great option, but the price is way more than its competitors similar roof options.

Long-term cost and environmental impact are debatable. I’ve owned a VW Beetle TDI since 1999 - it has 165K miles on it and still going strong. The price premium was $1200 and I estimated at the time that I’d have to own the car for almost 5 years in order to break even. Obviously, things worked out well for me.

The benefits of a hybrid are similar - if you are looking at only out-of-pocket savings then you’re going to have to hold on to the car for a while. Of biggest concern is the battery pack itself, it’s projected lifespan and its possibilities for recycling.

On the other hand, try to project resale value in, say, 5 years. If gasoline is priced in the 7-9 dollar range, how easy will it be to unload that 24MPG Edge? Ask today’s Hummer owners if they’re getting top dollar these days.

I’m shopping around to replace the Beetle now and, frankly, I’ve not seen anything that fully meets my needs. I like the Escape Hybrid but I can’t find any in the area and it’s a bit uncomfortable. The Edge with the Escape’s Hybrid drivetrain would be great.

PLEASE make an Edge Hybrid or electric Edge!!!! It’s about time. And two years from now is way too long!

24 mpg will not cut it. Why doesn’t Ford and 90% of the rest of the auto industry get it? It isn’t just about the environment…no one can afford to buy a new unless it will decreasee their gas consumption. Hybrid is a proven technology as is diesel and there are multiple other drive train platforms out there that are viable and could be put into production if some car company was really bold and visionary. Look at what the Prius did for Toyota…what would a fuelcell Edge do for Ford?

I really want an Edge but I’m waiting until it becomes a Hybrid. Anyone looking for an electric car might check out the Aptera being built by a California company and scheduled for 2008 production…very very cool!

Make a Diesel version with AWD and you have yourself a sale. Otherwise the Edge isn’t worth it for only 24 miles per gallon highway.

Please read some of the articles written on hybrids in publications like Popular Mechanics “Hybrid Hype”. You will find that the long term cost of owning hybrid vehicles is more than non-hybrid (including gas at $4/gallon) and the environmental impact is worse when you have to replace the battery.

I like the Edge–
I like the appearance, the interior, the sync, the handling and power. And as much as I dislike the over use of the 3 bar grille—it looks fine here. The only thing I guess I didnt expect was the storage behind the rear seats was bit small—but there is nothing you can do about that without killing the looks– so it is a valid trade off I suppose. A tarted-up version is a good thing—It has general good looks to begin with so it would only be fitting to have it roll on some big wheels (seems to be all rage right now). Please no wings or cheap body flare kits….

Hybrid seems to be a dirty word to Ford Dealers. Any time I bring up the subject they switch the subject.

It would be great with a six-speed, .and slightly lowered with a good sounding exhaust. Do not need a 3rd seat for my use. Dubs (22’s) are great!

I’m a 2007 Edge driver…I love my vehicle to death…its fun to drive and comfortable and safe…but I think when lease is up..I’m going to look at The Flex

The Edge is a great vehicle, fun to drive, dependable, etc. The achilles heel is the lack of a longer version with third row seating. With entries like Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and the movement away from traditional SUV’s like Explorer, the competition has trumped Edge in versatility. What a shame Ford didn’t add a third row and call it Explorer.

I went from owning an Explorer (3) to the Freestyle in ‘06. Now called the TaurusX. It has 3 rows and great versatility with folding down the seats inclucing the front passenger seat. It gets 18.8 in the city and 24.3 on the highway and that was driving 70 mph (not any more!). My lease is up in Oct and I’m going to the ‘09 Edge. Only downside is the gas mileage. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a hybrid but drop some poundage from this model. It’s almost as heavy as the Explorer!

Or you could look at Ford’s current 3 row crossover the Taurus X.

Uh…WRONG! It’s a 2 row crossover competing with the Murano et al and if you want 3 rows then you get the Flex…dig? All crossovers dont have to offer 3 rows…the Edge covers one segment , the Flex the other…

Please don’t add a third row seat that may get used twice each year and the other 363 days, you have weight, bulk, and less room. So if you need a third row, spend another $10,000 and go buy a different vehicle!
