At the Washington DC Auto Show, Ford announced that the Mariner will become “more fuel efficient, more powerful, and more connected in the 2009 model year.” The 2009 Mercury Mariner, along with the 2009 Ford Escape, are part of a strategy toward sustainability and fuel efficicency Ford’s been expanding upon since the Los Angeles and Detroit Auto Shows. Sue Ciscke, Ford senior vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering, outlined Ford’s high volume, customer-focused strategy to reduce gas emissions and improve fuel economy.

“Ford Motor Company is increasing fuel economy and cutting greenhouse gas emissions with affordable technologies for millions of customers,” said Cischke. “In the near term, we will leverage existing technologies to achieve those goals, including advanced engines and multi-speed transmissions. The 2009 Escape and Mariner are great examples of how we’re delivering today.” The theme of populist technology and sustainability for millions was a strong message at the 2008 North American International Auto Show where Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology was announced.

Ford is expanding its vehicles that run on biofuels, adding three additional vehicles to its E85-capable flexible fuel line-up for 2009 – the E-Series van, the Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. The new 2009 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner make strides in fuel economy and emissions with a 2.5-liter engine and 6-speed automatic transmission. Mercury Mariner is produced at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant. The 2009 models go on sale in summer 2008.

Ordered my Mariner Hybrid in June. No VIN yet, but scheduled to be built in November. I can't wait!! Expect a 6 month wait for delivery after ordering.
Christine says (October 17, 2008 at 9:43 pm):
I purchased a Mariner last month and I love it. It handles great, the white leather Voga interior is beautiful and I love the radiant lighting.
It really is a sexy little SUV!!!!
Chip says (July 31, 2008 at 3:28 pm):
How about coat hooks? How much can a a couple of grab handles and coat hooks add to the cost. How about a cargo net? If Ford is truly going to try to get people back as customers they're going to have to do a better job than the competiton, not just play catch up!

I am anticipating the debut of the Mariner. I have read that it will be available in August at the dealership. After seeing the interior on this picture gallery I am certain that the leather option is a better choice. The two-tone gives the SUV a sophistication that no other Compact SUV offers. We are both thrilled to have found this website.

Compliments to FORD,
A soon to be proud owner of the new Mariner!!

I'm reading the comments and wonder why FORD refuses to remedy the problem of cheap looking and feeling interiors. The Mariner, being a Mercury should have an upgraded interior. I would buy the Hybrid, but not until they come up with quality materials, and headrests that actually rest your head. Cadillac has finally caught on now how about Mercury and Lincoln...
KrisKris says (May 21, 2008 at 7:52 pm):
If the Mercury Mariner hybrid had full leather interior and some of the other extras like the Lincoln, I would consider purchasing one
Steve says (September 5, 2008 at 8:58 am):
They do have full leather interior available for the Mariner Hybrid.
Jerry Klaus says (April 19, 2008 at 4:19 pm):
If you make the leather interior of the hybrid mariner as nice as the lincoln, we will purchase one in 2009. Thank you.
Wendy says (May 3, 2008 at 12:28 pm):
I totally agree with the need to give buyers a choice to purchase a more luxurious interior including upgraded leather. I want a small to medium size 4WD hybrid. The Mercury Mariner seems to have everything I want except the luxury feel that I would be willing to pay for.
Walt Squires says (April 10, 2008 at 1:33 pm):
The photos of the 09 Mariner show assist handles on the windshield pillars and overheads that were all deleted in the 08 model year. Someone at Ford is listening. Will rear disc brakes return for the 4WD model that were also de-contented a few years back? These things use to be called engineering cost improvements.
Charles says (April 21, 2008 at 1:22 pm):
I agree with this comment. Ford should move on from drum brakes and go all disc. Drums are old technology. Ford competition ie. Hyundai, Honda use discs all around or are available as an option.

LAST MARCH 28 AT 2:15PM ON MY WAY TO PICK UP MY SON FROM SCHOOL I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 MERCURY MARINER WITH MY WIFE AND 21MONTH BABY IN THE CAR SEAT.MY WIFE WAS IN THE BACK AND WE SAW A CAR COMING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION TO US...THE CRASH WAS SO BAD MY VEHICLE FLIP OVER TWO CARS AND WE TURN UPSIDE DOWN OVER AND OVER MANY TIMES UNTIL WE STOP WITH THE WEELS UP.WE ARE ALIVE BECAUSE OF THE SIDE AIRBAGS.I WISH YOU CAN SEE MY SUV IT WAS TOTAL.I AM SOLVING THE SITUATION AND BYING A NEW 2009 MERCURY MARINER AGAIN.I CAN NEVER THANK MARCURY IN A LIVE TIME FOR PROTECTING MY FAMILY.IHAVE PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE TO SHOW ANY ONE WHO DOES NOT BELIVE IN THE SAFETY OF MERCURY.THANK YOU FAM.RIOS YHMOFF FROM SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO.
Lisa says (November 4, 2008 at 1:45 pm):
My daughter was recently in an accident and my Mariner was a total loss, all front-end damage. My daughter walked out of the car without a scratch thanks to the front airbag and the construction of this vehicle. I am definitely going to purchase another Mariner, this time a 2009.
Chris C says (April 8, 2008 at 2:29 pm):
My wife and I are both looking at buying a 2009 Mariner Hybrid as our next vehicle sometime around January of next year. The only downside to buying this vehicle is the fear of rollovers. I would really appreciate seeing the pictures you have of the accident. If the accident is truly as bad as you describe, then I think our fears of the Mariner being a dangerous SUV can be laid to rest. Thanks for your post.
Jim says (April 1, 2008 at 9:05 am):
This hybrid SUV is very close to perfection. The lack of a european quality interior is the only thing that holds it back.
What's up with the plastic everywhere... come on it's 2008. At least give us the OPTION to purchase a nicer interior.
The only negative I see with this... its a shame...
musgeorge zeiler says (March 21, 2008 at 7:30 pm):
DOES THE BACK WINDOW OPEN,ON THE HATCH
IF NOT ,I WONT BUY IT
TO HAVE A FIXED WINDOW ON A UTILITY VEHICLE
DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE
I BUY UTILITY ,FOR THAT REASON--- UTILITY
Tim says (April 28, 2008 at 3:43 pm):
Yes, the current Mariners and Escape's have a seperate button to open just the window
george zeiler says (March 21, 2008 at 7:21 pm):
what is the gas milage ,on the mariner
Fred says (March 21, 2008 at 11:11 am):
The 2008 Mercury Mariner is the most beautiful small size SUV that I have seen!!!
BRUCE CAMPBELL says (January 28, 2008 at 7:05 pm):
I WILL PURCHASE AN EDGE WHEN IT BURNS ETHANOL
