Verve Concept: Ford’s New Vision for Small Cars

With the North American debut of Ford’s Verve Concept, Ford announces a new vision for its future: small cars and sustainability. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to people who love Ford’s European small cars like the Ford Focus, Fiesta and Ka. “Ford’s small cars are loved in Europe and Americans love our European small cars,” says Jim Farley, Ford’s Group Vice President, Marketing and Communications. “Our global scale helps us develop and test products that we can bring to—and change—the North American market.”

Both four- and three-door Verve body styles were unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, as an introduction to a family of small cars set to debut in Europe and Asia beginning later this year and in North America in 2010. The four-door is the basis for the production vehicle that will be sold in North America. The European three- door is being shown to test market reaction to the body style. If it’s well received, it could be an added to the Verve product line.

Ford is building on decades of small car leadership in Europe as it develops new small cars for North America to appeal to customers who value technology, design and fuel efficiency. “The Ford global design team remembered, not so fondly, the econo-boxes of the 1970s and created the Verve concept as a vision of just how good a small car can be,” said J Mays, Ford’s group vice president of Design and chief creative officer. “Verve aims to ‘right’ North American buyers’ earlier small-car experiences by offering a product that changes customers’ views of small cars from ‘cheap’ to chic — and from affordable to desirable.”

i just saw this at the LA Auto Show. i liked it. it appears really tall and bulky for the segment of the auto world that i think this car is targeted for. im sure it will be introduced as a crossover of some sort, but i still liked it. it provides a style that ford lacks at this moment. and cars like this, and the new ford idea of sustainable, small, and affordable, may be the saver of Ford at least, if the other american companies don't follow suit. the only thing besides this car that ford is missing, is the new and upcoming less expensive, smaller box-ish suv. honda- element, Kia- is getting the soul, scion- xb, nissan is bringing the cube, and i believe there was one im missing, but sooner or later, ford will need to try that new small box suv segment as well. this car needs to be introduced as soon as possible, and with as much of the show car qualities as possible. i am an aspiring auto designer, and i liked this car. maybe needs to be ford-ified on the front end. (use the ford front grill or something0.

Bring this in the 2010 model year and it will be right on time. Could Ford finally come out with an innovative design before the other manufacturers?
Jeff M says (November 23, 2008 at 6:47 pm):
Ford, I just saw the Verve concept up close at the LA auto show. I have seen plenty of pictures on the net, and I love it, but it looks even better in person.

My reaction? I looked at my girlfriend, and the first words out of my mouth were, and I quote: "Ford better build this f---ing car!!!!!"

The verve is better looking than ANYTHING Ford has on the road today in America. This car is so far superior aesthetically that it makes you wonder what the US designers and marketing geniuses were smoking when they approved the current Ford line-up.

I am not particularly into cars this small, but honestly I would buy this thing. It is classy and sporty at the same time. And if you don't fark up the interior it could be a tremendous hit. A TREMENDOUS hit!

Ford, if you don't build this car, as is (at least on the exterior) then I will have no choice but to see my stake in your company and to continue supporting foreign car makers. There is absolutely no excuse for not building cars this attractive in the US.

BUILD THIS CAR!!!!!

I have been a Ford product person for sometime now and presently in the market for a new car next year. Unfortunately, for the money and value, I am strongly leaning to Honda. Ford.....Please don't wait another 1-2 years to bring out the Verve.....I will not wait forever. Give the people what they want....more standard options without having to pay extra dollars....it can be done.
Brad J says (November 19, 2008 at 5:36 pm):
more standard options for a lower price? Compare the 2009 Focus to ANY vehicle out there. Best Quality, options, and not to mention MPG for the price!
Greg says (November 16, 2008 at 9:27 am):
Finally! Could this be the small upscale car absent in today's market? Who say's that a small US car must be an entry-level vehicle anyway? Show me one with good gas-mileage, appointed with the amenities of an upscale car and I'll stand in line to buy it. Ford, are you listening?
Rod Bassman says (November 8, 2008 at 5:56 pm):
Dear Ford: Please give us the 3 door hatchback Sport model that the European press has been so enraptured with. With a 5 speed manual transmission and tall 5th gear for highway driving. No sunroof please. I'm saving my money now, give me something worth spending it on.
Jeff says (November 5, 2008 at 10:08 am):
This is an awesome looking automobile. I can only hope Ford will produce it here in the States and produce it soon. I hope that it will perform as well as the Fiesta and Focus.
Mike Huff says (October 25, 2008 at 10:13 am):
When our Escort wagon died after 270,000 miles, my wife and I went to our local Ford dealer to purchase a Focus Wagon only to find that they were discontinued.

We bought the Taurus wagon, but still miss the mileage of the Escort.

Bring back a sub compact wagon, with the Euro diesel!
Stephenie Spotz says (October 24, 2008 at 12:04 pm):
when will be available in the US to purchase?
Jay says (October 22, 2008 at 8:11 pm):
I desperately want to support the Ford Company with my next vehicle purchase. The last car I bought was a Highlander Hybrid for 31K with 25K miles on it instead of a new Escape Hybrid for 25K because I was afraid that after I rolled off the lot I would loose a bulk of my monetary investment and the repair records for the cars were not even comprable. I want to support the Ford company with my next new car purchase but I need a good reason to purchase it NOW not three years from now when the Japaneese companies have already come out with the concept years prior. If you put out an electric vehicle like the Fuse NOW, the country and people like myself would be grateful. I just don't understand why the world's first car company can't break all the rules, make an electric car a priority and put it into production before the Tesla company takes the whole market. I don't understand why Ford's hybrids don't out perform and cost less than the Japaneese versions with a bumper to bumper warantee that makes buying foriegn an obvious mistake. TEAR UP THE RULE BOOK, write a new one, get these products out and make America proud to by American again.
Stafford says (October 7, 2008 at 10:26 am):
Wow, at last, an American car that excites me. Is it too good to be true? Will it be made in the US? in Michigan?
tggio says (September 26, 2008 at 10:02 pm):
Ford,
Some keys to success:
1) Update your models within 4 years; don't stretch it out as long as you do (ie Ford Ranger has the same styling since 1993; the Focus went 7 years (2000 - 2007; don't even get me started with the Taurus) without serious updates.
2) Fuel economy...don't brag about 30 MPG; 30 MPG is not good enough. When you put hybrids in the Fusions, Focus', Verves, etc., then brag.
3) Bring new cars to market sooner. How can you increase market share when your competitors already have the concepts you speak of on the road now?
4) Have a line up which will appeal to younger drivers (affordable and stylish). You have too many cars outside the reach of people of limited means. Give these people a reason to join the Ford family, especially at a young age, and get them to want to stay within the family regardless of age or status.
5) Lose the conservative styling. Get the designers who created the Edge and Verve to lead and approve the design for other cars. Retire the designers of the Taurus and Lincolns.
6) Make more of your options standard equipment. People like a lot of standard equipment but do not want to be gouged.
7) Improve quality. I do think it has improved. Use quality parts from suppliers. When you see a specific part failing repeatedly from a supplier which increase customer repair bills; hold these suppliers accountable; make them pay or find a better supplier.
8) Lincoln should be the flagship and should have a look of their own instead of a rebadged Ford. Not sure what the marketing strategy is for this line up. I am sure the Fords are built on the same line as the Lincolns, but feel Ford should adjust their marketing by saying Fords are built on the Lincoln assembly line instead of saying Lincolns are built on the Ford assembly line.

I wish you would bring out the Verve now to the USA.

I am open to comments.
tom husband says (October 1, 2008 at 10:03 am):
It is possible to go to europe and puchase the new ford verve diesel and then ship it home to the usa..?

I do not think it is fair not to have a 65 mpg diesel powered car available to consumers and then public transpertation and Commercial tractor trailers all run on diesel .. I would go to europe and purchase if available to do so .. nice car..

thanks
Roxanne says (September 26, 2008 at 5:36 pm):

joel o. says (September 23, 2008 at 7:12 pm):
Great styling for a change, but need to match honda/toyota durability to make a permenant mark and stop losing market share. Good luck Ford.
MOKA says (September 22, 2008 at 3:13 pm):
Well and for Mexico i hope it will be at 2010 but i imagine it going to came in 2009 'cause we get the units 1 year before the real model. so we have now models 2009 until we are in 2008. so it will middle half or second half of 2009??? can some one help me??
Holtsclaw says (November 24, 2008 at 1:54 am):
Huh?
Mike says (September 17, 2008 at 5:51 pm):
Please don't scrap this one like you did the Fiesta!!!
Michael says (September 14, 2008 at 2:07 pm):
In 1982 I rented a Ford Escort in Portugal.
I loved it. Great handling, great brakes and frugal. Returned to the US and went to my local Ford dealer to buy one. It was a totally different car.
The US version was a cruel joke compared to the Euro model. I sure hope this new car will be the Euro spec model.
Twenty six years later they might make a sale with me. WOW, twenty six years. How many other sales has Ford lost in 26 years?
