Ford Explorer America Concept
Ford Explorer America Concept

Ford is showing its commitment to sustainability at the 2008 North American International Auto Show by announcing EcoBoost engine technology exemplified by the Explorer America concept.

Ford’s sustainability strategy focuses on increasing fuel efficiency by reducing vehicle weight, improving aerodynamics, saving fuel with electric power assisted steering (EPAS), and introducing a powertrain lineup that includes a 4 cylinder, 2 liter engine with EcoBoost technology. Depending on the engine, fuel efficiency can improve up to 30% versus today’s V-6 Explorer.

Outside it reflects Explorer’s heritage, featuring an integrated three bar grille, defined power dome hood, wraparound rear glass panel window and a sliding rear door. Inside it sports stackable, sliding seats, a worktable with seats that deploy from the tailgate, and a three-dimensional navigation unit built into the instrument panel. Explorer America concept addresses how the SUV market has changed in the past 15 years and looks to what people expect out of the next generation of crossovers, namely sustainability, flexibility, and performance.

Explorer Concept will be on display at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.

ME WANT ONE!!! I don't care what it takes or who you have to sacrifice, I'll be right here eagerly awaiting its arrival in my local Ford showroom!!!!
Frank Crea says (June 4, 2008 at 8:38 pm):
I like what I read about the Explorer America concept car. Especially a 4 cyclinder engine with a turbo...long overdue!!! Bring it out NOW! I will buy...
Elizabeth says (June 1, 2008 at 6:22 pm):
I've been waiting for the SUV with the minivan doors. No need to kill the Explorer look, but change the doors to sliding -- moms will buy this -- it's the real reason that we drive minivans!
CO Jim says (May 24, 2008 at 11:53 pm):
I've owned 4 Explorers over the past 14 years. I still drive one
L R OURY says (May 16, 2008 at 5:43 pm):
I think it's cutting edge and it's about time for a big makeover on the Explorer. I'm 50 years old and have always felt that FORD has played it safe when they have a model year change. When I see pictures of FORD's European cars I always wonder why you haven't built that model over here. In this concept I like the shape and window heights. The vehicle looks like a cross between a Toyota FJ and a Explorer.
J says (May 31, 2008 at 10:41 am):
you are totally right
Harvey says (May 8, 2008 at 6:59 am):
ok--maybe on second thought---I like this design---I still would want to bump into anything with that front end........that would be about a $4K fix bare minimum---I just checked out the new Honda Pilot.....dear lord.......that is the ugliest thing they have ever done---this new Explorer design is lightyears ahead--if you get a chance go view the new Pilot---they really messed that thing up!
George Badr says (April 29, 2008 at 2:55 pm):
very nice i love it
Ben says (April 21, 2008 at 6:58 pm):
Its! About! Time! Finally a new fresh idea that I like. Ford first of all need to stay ahead of the game, because Toyota and GM products are kicking your you know what? I like the MK T , the Explorer and that small car you guys are coming up with all concepts! Make them! You won't be dissappointed.
Oldtimer says (April 20, 2008 at 7:41 am):
It's remarkable how many comments come from folks who: 1. Have never seen a CONCEPT vehicle (i.e. Hello! The don't actually build these things as you see them.) and 2. Can't use basic English. One could hope that it's just a lack of reading what you wrote, but we know better, don't we?

Regarding this concept vehicle: This is simply to try out some new ideas and guage public opinion. It does forego the three bar grille -- Thanks!
Tim L. says (May 5, 2008 at 3:35 pm):
The reason why some people are upset about this car is that it strays so far from what the car was and why the loyal customers kept coming back to it. Most people, who are stirred up by it, are upset about the grill and the headlights and the fact FoMoCo is dabbling in the idea of making it into a crossover. It's not for you to tell them that they can't be upset about how drastically it is proposed to be changed. They have all the right in the world to be upset. If they care that much about the model's future, let them. Have you ever owned an Explorer or even driven one? I know people that have two or three of them, because they love the engineering and design of the car.
This is a message/discussion board, and more importantly, the internet. People don't use correct grammar all of the time, and why would you say such a thing? It just goes to show that you believe yourself to be better than everyone else, so if you are, why are you on an automobile discussion board? Are you the overall Grand Puba of the internet, who goes around and criticizes other's comments? If so, we are graced by thine presence.
Thanks!
BERNICE says (April 17, 2008 at 8:51 am):
I PERSONALLY THINK THAT IT IS A FABILOUS NEW CONCEPT AND IT WILL DEFINATLY SELL IN SOUTH AFRICA WHERE STYLISH CARS IS EVERYTHING
joe demarino says (April 11, 2008 at 4:13 pm):
ford needs to make this vechile it's hot looking
KENNETH says (April 8, 2008 at 10:16 pm):
I LIKE THIS SUV SAW IT AT THE AUTO SHOW IN NEW YORK I THINK YOU SHOULD CONSIDER MAKING IT MORE THAN A CONCEPT I WOULD BUY ONE
Harvey says (April 8, 2008 at 3:02 pm):
I dont know--I'm kind of up in the air on this design....I want to like it.....but is has some weird elements involved in the front end. I suppose it will be toned back a bit for production---JUST NO 3 BAR FRIGGING GRILL.............PLEEEEZZZEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!. god almighty they wear me out on that design---is everyone asleep or stoned over there in the design center?? Anyway, I just worry that its obsolete already with fuel prices headed to 4 bux and beyond a gallon. I think a massive re-do on the Escape would be money better spent. The Explorer still sells fairly well but unless they come up with one that gets a minimum 30 mpg then they shouldnt waste time with a stop gap measure because eventually they will have make something to adapt to the changing times. The S-max is a valid alternate in my book. Make that unit with 4WD and a jack it up a notch!
Yugene says (April 1, 2008 at 1:58 pm):
Very nice vehicle, saught it in NYC, very stylish, maybe need some work on rear side, but over all very nice, futuristic, modern SUV. Thank you guys for working this way.
Ron says (March 30, 2008 at 8:08 pm):
I like the concept, but I'd be curious about the seat comfort...they seem very thin. I like the innovation and would love to see this car in production
Melissa says (March 28, 2008 at 11:14 am):
Mama said "don't buy no ugly truck"! Where have the days gone of "REAL" trucks and what about comfort? This is hideous!
