The comments have been pouring in since Ford launched the All-New 2009 Ford Flex last week at the New York Auto show. Ford designers called it a polarizing car, and according to what you’ve been posting they were right: it’s got people talking.

Erin Johnson writes: “Well the first time I saw the All New Ford Flex, I thought to myself, Man, what a vehicle that is.” “This is the kind of vehicle I have been CRAVING!” says James Scherrer.

Others are more critical in their opinions: College Student in AL calls the Flex “a cardboard box on wheels.” James Barone writes: “The exterior and interior look good but not groundbreaking.”

The design of the new Flex has sparked a lot of thought. Marc says it’s a “good looking ride.” andrewscott says that the Ford Flex “has revived my hope in American car companies to … design a truly unique and cool vehicle.” David G. Pollard thinks “It has some true American character to it!!

But, one of the hottest topics of conversations revolves around the name – the Ford Flex. Many preferred “Fairlane” (the name of the concept car from which the Flex takes its inspiration) and some find “Flex” confusing. Oakville Employee writes “Flex implies Flexible fuel system eg. E85, diesel, Hybrid etc.” Everyone has a suggestion – Falcon, Cruze, Discovery, Country Squire, Excursion (sorry folks…that one’s already taken…). Wayne says, “it could be worse… they could have called it the SCOOTER”. In reality, Ford responds that the name ‘Flex’ reflects this vehicle’s capability and style, and was the product of extensive consumer research. In the end, the excitement over the design trumps all. As Lee says, “fortunately the product is so amazing that you could have resurrected the name Edsel and it will sell.”

Love it or hate it, it’s got people talking. Billy Balog captures the sentiments best: “Given the infectious buzz so far, it is safe to say Ford is back. Both the interior and exterior intrigue me.”

If you got to see the Flex at the New York Auto Show—or even if you’ve just read about it—tell us what you think!

Who's gonna buy this car? There is little to no imagination in it's styling. No "wow, I gotta have this car" factor to it. and Ford could really use a "wow" vehicle in their lineup. I'm sure the "older" crowd will like it, you know the ones who bought boxy Chrysler K cars in the 1980's, but the 1980's are gone Ford, give us forward thinking, not back to the '80's boxiness.
TDK says (August 13, 2008 at 12:44 pm):
Just when you thought Ford couldn't mak an uglier vehicle....... here is the Flex or should I say Flop!

I work for a major Ford dealer and we haven't retailed a single unit. We have dealer traded a few, but none over the curb a we say.

Ford needs to fire their design team and start from scratch! Ford has compiled an increddible list of recent blunders including the 500 now labeled a Taurus, Taurus X, Thunderbird, GT40 an now the Flex. What they might want to consider is re-introducing the Pinto and Fairmont models. I can see great success with a possible Hybrid Pinto getting an impressive 45 MPG and the fairmont getting 35 MPG with the ability to comfortably seat 5. Here is where Ford should be but instead they are wasting money on the Flex and redesigning the F150....like anyone cares.

Denial is an ugly thing! Ford had better get their act together or they will be in serious trouble within the next few years. Seriously in trouble!

Sadly Ford is quickly becoming a train wreck of an auto company. How could Ford go from being a class leader to such a failure in such a short duration? Ford is no longer competitive anymore. Their products are generic and listless and have absolutely no uniqueness. Ford's latest turkey: the Flex, with all of it's mega bloated 4600 pounds all contained in an ugly square fashion. I guess the Dodo's in product marketing at Ford thought that this "pimp my ride" look of their new 2 1/2 ton Flex would make jaws drop at it's "cool, nasty ride." Indeed the Flex is nasty in accordance to what nasty really means: highly unpleasant! Back in the days when Ford used to have better ideas, they did just that. But nowadays Ford has flipped and flopped and is at the brink of toppling. The only salvation for Ford is to let Mazda and Ford of Europe do All the design work for Ford's future products in America.

It's not difficult to predict that the Flex will flop. The Flex flopped before it even made it's way into production. And all the while the bean counters and product planners at Ford stand scratching their heads wondering why they can't sell cars. DUH!!!! When the 1986 Taurus and Sable premiered the world was in awe over these cutting edge automobiles. They were light weight, roomy, fuel efficient, and very stylish. Ford was at the helm of success with these cars. Afterwards Ford began putting a major emphasis on trucks and suv's. They allowed their car lines to stagnate and the foreign competition quickly stole Ford's spotlight. Now Ford is in the hottest water they've ever been in. Basically products not many people want. Strangely the Mustang has been successful with all of it's odd retroness. I personally don't think Ford has much of a leg to stand on. If crap like the Flex is their new design philosophy then the curtain is going to fall fast.

Renaming the Five Hundred the Taurus= FLOP
Renaming the Montego the Sable= FLOP
Renaming the Freestyle the Taurus X= FLOP
And now a new model with a really dumb name: the Flex= FLOP

What have we here, the Flop Motor Company?
F-150 Loyalist says (November 27, 2007 at 8:32 pm):
I have owned F-150's for years and love the way that the current F-150's have that tought look in them. Internet rumor and renderings show the Flex front end on a F-150 for the 2009 model year. This is a giant step backwards. When the 1996 model F-150 came out it was groundbreaking because of its aerodynamic roundness in a sea of boxy trucks. Now Ford wants to go back to the boxy style? What gives? The Flex is a rehashed, boxy, Edge. PERIOD. Whoop de do. Now they want to "restyle" the F-150 with the boxy treatment. I won't buy one if it is that UGLY!
Jack brown says (July 29, 2007 at 1:09 pm):
I think that all of these new fords are ugly they are actually discusting. What happened to the 1990 ford broncos or the 1970 f 100 ranger body style. these new cars are so discusting that it makes me angry ooking at them. i will always stay with older fords. how can anyone want such a piece of junk like the ford flex. or any other new ford at that. its not only ford but they are also ugly.
John says (September 1, 2008 at 11:59 pm):
Geeze!!! Cutting edge? Want to continue to defend the UGLY Flex? It's obvious dealers can't sell these bloated shoe boxes. I haven't even seen one on the road! But I must admit that my local Ford dealer is stock piled with them; as well as several other Ford dealers in my area who are stocked to their gils with them. So, go ahead and defend the ridicules Flex. Fortunately, it's only a miniscule amount of the population who finds the cretinous Flex appealing!
24 studfent says (June 26, 2008 at 10:48 am):
Man I wouldn't even buy this truck for my grandmother......... that is why Ford sales are slumping. you don't see Porsche or BMW going back to box style vehicles...........
micky says (December 12, 2007 at 10:40 am):
The people who say they hate the new Ford Vehicle--like the Ford Flex--remind me of the people who say they are too fond of, and blinded by, the "good ol days" to actually see the elivated style and automoltive beauty of the Flex and other newer vehicle Ford is begining to produce. To some, the horse and bugy is considered sheer genious. Remember when mobile phones first came out? Our the Computer? Back then they were considered great AND stylish. We, Ford, has and is evovling. The Flex is considered cuttuing edge, in style and in substance. I am glad Ford is truly moving forward. It will only be a matter of time before the consummer takes off the blinds and realize that American car companys are heading in the right direction...and despite pleas by the Fred Flinstones and the Barney Rubbles of our society Ford see the logic NOT to return to the not-too distant stoneage...when Americans were just beginning to lose ground to forgien--an era that started the myth everything American Made is inferior in style and in substance!
german mora says (June 30, 2007 at 12:52 am):
this is my future vehicle, it is beautiful. can't wait for next year. well done ford. i love it. congratulation. german
Arizona Insurance Broker says (June 28, 2007 at 1:19 am):
The Ford Airstream is an unusual looking car. So odd it is kind of interesting.
eric barnes says (April 27, 2007 at 3:42 pm):
clearly ford finally realizes what it needs to push itself above the competition!
