The blogs have been buzzing, and now it’s official: Ford’s latest crossover, the 2009 Ford Flex, was unveiled this morning at the 2007 New York International Auto Show. Setting out to redefine the modern American family vehicle, the Flex—bringing to production the 2005 Ford Fairlane Concept —is a full sized crossover that builds on the success of the new Ford Edge.

Ford Flex’s designer, Richard Gresen, thinks that the Flex is even more daring than the 2005 Ford Fairlane concept. “In a lot of ways the production car takes the concept car to another level,” he says. “We wanted to stay as close as possible to the concept vehicle. It’s bold. It’s something we haven’t done with a lot of our cars, but we really pushed it with this one.”

Peter Horbury, executive director Design, the Americas, agrees:
“Flex is following in the tire tracks, so to speak, of Ford vehicles like the Taurus, Explorer, and Mustang. It’s the next iconic Ford. It shatters today’s image of people movers.”

“The Ford Flex has the power to move people emotionally as well as physically,” says J Mays, group vice president of Design and chief creative officer. “This crossover has been created for people who know it’s the journey—not the destination—that matters most.”

Ford Flex goes on sale in summer 2008. Gresen is excited to see what the public’s reaction will be. “We wanted to give people a sense of pride driving this vehicle. We want them to look at it and say, ‘I want to drive this!’”

I finally went to my local ford dealership to see the all-new Ford Flex "Limited". At first glance I stated it looks like a "Wagon" and asked the sales person where's the "Wood". He began to explain that this vehicle is more than a that. I'm personally not a big fan of the "Wagon Look", but it's appealing after a while of looking. He began explaining all the features and benefits of this vehicle and sat me down in the front seat. I have to say. "The inside is plush". The leather seats are soft and very comfortable. Made me feel like I was seating in a glove. The refigerator console is incredible. No more stops at a convience store paying 1.49 for a drink for the kids. The room in this vehicle is very versatile for my family. I have 3 girls. They need their space "If you know what I mean". The test drive was impressive as well. Smooth, Quiet, and very Comfortable. This is a definantly a "Road Trip" worthy crossover. It plenty powerful when needed and handles like a sports car. I'm impressed. Over all grade "A". I still have the "Wagon Appearance" growing on me.

i purchased a 09 Flex last week and I LOVE IT!!! As a mother of 2 kids and former owner of the expedition I needed antother vehicle with not only room but now a days better on gas that my suv. Well i have both now. I love the way it drives and the way the interior is set up. Most if not all the people that i've come into contact this week were intrigued and excited about our new ride. Take it for a test drive, you will be amazed how it handles and how much room you have. I LOVE MY FLEX!!!!!!!!!!

George says (June 20, 2008 at 3:22 pm):
The first time i saw thin, it was at a 2007 auto show, and it was an AMAZING beach wagon, much like the woodys of the forties with a white wicker themed interior. What happened? This is now no more than a mommy wagon. At the very least, they should release a Foose edition.
MaryLou Zamorano says (June 20, 2008 at 2:41 am):
Have been waiting for this car! Finally drove one today and loved it!!! That is except for the headrests. I would have bought the car today if not for these bizarre headrests. I felt like my head was being pushed forward and really couldn't get the seat to be comfortable. Not good for people with neck or back problems! Design a new headrest fast or may have trouble selling this car!
Sheryl says (June 19, 2008 at 12:05 pm):
When will Ford figure out that first, not all of us want an SUV. We're looking for size and economy. We have 2 Windstar vans 2000 and 2002 that offer all the size we want and ecomony these new vehicles don't offer. The 2000 gets 27 on the highway loaded for long trips. With the 26 gallon tank I can drive over 500 miles per day. Not everyone wants a van either but these new gas hogs have to go. Give me what I want here shortly as both vans are approaching 200,000 miles with no major problems as they've been properly maintained.
Sonny says (June 18, 2008 at 9:39 am):
We have a Ford Excursion and LOVE it, but the fuel economy is killing me. I recently drove a Ford Explorer, which has great gas mileage but when you put our three kids in the back, that thing is TINY! This new Ford Flex looks like the perfect middle-ground for us - great for in town and short trips, but we'll definately keep the Excursion for towing/long haul road trips. I would venture to guess the Flex is a competitor to the mini vans, and not to the Scion XBs like some have posted. Good job Ford - I can't wait to test drive!
Cesar says (June 14, 2008 at 1:10 am):
I'm sorry but my Scion XB has more (mpg's) then this crap...why can't you get your own designs Frod? Gas is one big reason why not to buy this Flex ..plus how is the safety in this car? i want to start a family and gas and safety is my #1 in buying a car.. my XB has all around air bags and so many safety features. what does yours have?..i think in 2010 ford will have a sign that read s FORD FOR SALE! get smart.. build a car that gives better gas and safety. Oh and i spend $30 every two weeks on my XB.. 8 ).
Casey says (June 27, 2008 at 7:20 pm):
The Scion is very ugly and cheap. The Ford has many Maybe you're jealous because you can't afford this new car!!
elizabeth says (June 26, 2008 at 9:20 pm):
well at least Ford is an American car company! people like you buying foreign cars is one of the reasons for the bad economy!! plus the scion is way ugly!!
alberto says (June 10, 2008 at 10:33 am):
Going in the same line. Won't you think it looks likea an enlarge Toyota Scion XB?
Scott Williams says (June 26, 2008 at 11:58 pm):
Doesn't look like a Scion Xb at all. Those are ugly. looks to me like a giant Mini Cooper Clubman. I like it!
Roger Marrone says (June 10, 2008 at 10:27 am):
When I saw the FLEX for the first time at the auto show my first reaction was, “Whoa! A MINI Cooper on steroids!” I thought I was so clever to make that comparison but now I see a bunch of you guys beat me to it. I could see a Christmas tree strapped to the top of the FLEX and my 88 year old parents sliding comfortably into the back seat. “Just what I need.” As I got closer to the display my thumping heart sunk to my stomach, “Just another decadent tank in retro clothes.” Too bad. I’ve always wondered how many more new Thunderbirds would be on the street if FORD had made them as affordable to own and operate as BMW has done with the MINI Cooper. I live in a small town and for every Thunderbird (one) there are 20 MINI’s including mine and my next door neighbor’s. I don’t expect to see more than one FLEX either, if any at all. Happy motoring.
rakesh says (June 29, 2008 at 7:30 pm):
I think this on elooks more like Land Rover than any thing else, I don't know why people think it is big mini cooper...
al says (June 10, 2008 at 1:11 am):
I bought a ford edge this year and we love it. can't wait to see the flex. Great replacement for explorer and expedition.we are all geeting craezy with gas miles.u tink $4 is bad what are u going to do when it hites $8.00 ....walk!!
al says (June 10, 2008 at 1:06 am):
The Flex is the next big thing for Ford. I bought a edge and i love it and it gets good gas miles. but i don't miss the f150 4wd that got 10 mpg..
Car admirer says (June 10, 2008 at 12:03 am):
wooow..a shameful copy of the fantastic Honda Element....I would be very ashamed to say i "WAS" the "DESIGNER" of this car... C'mon people!
bob says (June 26, 2008 at 9:23 pm):
if you had read anything about the car than you would know that they are trying to bring the look of the woody back... and why are so many people that think Ford sucks on this website?? it is a website for ford!!
