The blogs have been buzzing, and now it’s official: Ford’s latest crossover, the 2009 Ford Flex, was unveiled this morning at the 2007 New York International Auto Show. Setting out to redefine the modern American family vehicle, the Flex—bringing to production the 2005 Ford Fairlane Concept —is a full sized crossover that builds on the success of the new Ford Edge.

Ford Flex’s designer, Richard Gresen, thinks that the Flex is even more daring than the 2005 Ford Fairlane concept. “In a lot of ways the production car takes the concept car to another level,” he says. “We wanted to stay as close as possible to the concept vehicle. It’s bold. It’s something we haven’t done with a lot of our cars, but we really pushed it with this one.”

Peter Horbury, executive director Design, the Americas, agrees:
“Flex is following in the tire tracks, so to speak, of Ford vehicles like the Taurus, Explorer, and Mustang. It’s the next iconic Ford. It shatters today’s image of people movers.”

“The Ford Flex has the power to move people emotionally as well as physically,” says J Mays, group vice president of Design and chief creative officer. “This crossover has been created for people who know it’s the journey—not the destination—that matters most.”

Ford Flex goes on sale in summer 2008. Gresen is excited to see what the public’s reaction will be. “We wanted to give people a sense of pride driving this vehicle. We want them to look at it and say, ‘I want to drive this!’”

I have always loved FORD. BUT in this day, why would anyone build another gas hog that only gets 24 mpg on the highway? Ford needs to build a competitor to the Scion Van. PLEASE> I have an F350 crew cab and It is killing me now even though I loved it for so long.

I love this car so much and I think you people at ford are the best .
Aputnam says (May 12, 2008 at 2:34 pm):
Anyone who would drive this monstrosity is asking for karma to kick them in the a$$. Ford and big oil are killing the planet; and fast.
Plutocracy=Ford says (May 10, 2008 at 9:54 pm):
Ford needs to wake up and realize that the day of the SUV is over. Japanese and European manufacturers are now beginning to advertise for 60 mpg automobiles in overseas markets. I only hope that Ford finally decides to join the competition and gets away from it's thinking that bigger is better. One can only afford so many 9 Billion in losses per year.
Lucky Mom says (May 8, 2008 at 12:43 am):
I had the chance to ride in one as part of a focus group yesterday; got to ask a lot of questions. I'm also a GM/Toyota fan, but this car makes me think again about looking at Ford with an open mind. The Ford guy driving the prototype told us the highway mileage should be @24 mpg, city in the 17-19 mpg range, or about 21 mpg under normal mixed usage. Not bad at all, for such a big car! Not being a Ford fan, I had no idea what I was going to see when they told us we were studying the Flex. I was totally surprised to find a third seat back there! I don't know that the video does the classy, retro look justice. Yeah, it's similar to an XBox or MiniCoop on steroids, a lowered stretch FJ Cruiser, but it is cool all on its own. At the risk of over-inflating anyone's expectations, I was really, truly, pleasantly surprised at the thoroughness of the design thoughts throughout this Flex. I really liked it, and I generally gt pleasure from hating Fords!

Looks like a cross between the Toyota Scion and the Honda Element, with an Explorer nose. Personally, I wouldn't buy it, or anything it resembles. Try again, Henry.
Gene says (May 5, 2008 at 11:04 pm):
yay! lets be followers and call ourselves inovative. we can make a super-cooper commander xb element. GO (away) Ford!
Ed says (May 4, 2008 at 5:47 pm):
I like the retro look of the vehicle. Harkens back to more carefree days. I'm not a Ford person, a GM enthusiast. However, its time to replace my aging Tahoe and I've added this to my list of candidates which also includes the GMC Acadia and the '09 Honda Pilot, which also made the move a more squared off and truck like appearance. The more squared off and masculine looks of the Flex and the new Pilot are a better match, style-wise than the more rounded and feminine looks of the Acadia for a 38 year old male like myself. Like others in this forum, mileage will be of great concern and it will factor very largely in how I will finally assess the Flex as a replacement for my current vehicle. The Acadia and Pilot have decent fuel economy that is nearly twice what I'm getting with my current V-8 powered Tahoe (5.8 ltr engine, about 9 mpg in the city). With the V-6 engine and six speed automatic transmission I would guess that the Flex would get about 16 - 18 mpg EPA estimates or 13 - 15 mpg city (realworld). The interior of the vehicle is nice with plenty of apparent leg and hip room which is important to someone is both big and tall. Some of the standard features I could care less about, like the Sync by Microsoft or the skylite roof. It will appeal to others, but it's just not my bag. Other things, like cargo carrying, towing, spaciousness and not looking like a soccor mom's car are important to me. Let's hope it gets decent gas mileage, I would hate to see a cool looking vehicle like this stuck on the dealer lot because it can't go for long without a fillup. Even if it is a Ford.
Dan Gonzales says (May 1, 2008 at 7:28 am):
No mileage figures are given. Will this vehicle's gas mileage finally give us a the economy we demand?
Kim says (April 29, 2008 at 10:43 pm):
I like this vehicle! not a fan of the box look, but after seeing this one I will be down to my local Ford dealership to trade in my toyota.
bill says (April 28, 2008 at 4:40 am):
It seems ironic that as much as people will hate to hear this, when i saw this (albeit cool) car my first thought was "wow that is some cool station wagon (whoops, I meant 'crossover')"
Stuart says (April 27, 2008 at 7:53 pm):
Nice vehicle. Do the rear seats come out? For camping? Thanks.
Mike says (May 7, 2008 at 11:41 am):
Yes the rear seats come out, but not for camping. Any other purpose is fine but for camping, you're out of luck. This reply brought to you by the Association Against Sentence Fragments.
dianne says (April 25, 2008 at 10:57 pm):
Love this - looks like a Mini-cooper on steroids! It's boxy and retro and even though I am a mopar gal - I will probably cross over to the dark side to get this! But, what will ultimately influence my decision is: WHAT IS THE MPG?? And will it take flex fuel? Will it come in a hybrid option? More details!!! Even my husband loves this car! (But it also needs better color choices.)
Family Man says (April 24, 2008 at 11:49 am):
That has to be one of the ugliest vehicles I have ever seen.
jaid says (April 22, 2008 at 12:30 pm):
Doesnt Toyota already offer this vehicle. The xb or wait is that the Honda Element. Point being stop following and start taking the lead. Everyone doesnt have to like what you offer. The Edge is your perfect example. IT STANDS OUT. I have never mistaken this vehicle ont the road with another even at night. And would have purchased one if it had a 3rd row. So, the Saturn Outlook is sitting in my drive way.
Diane X says (April 22, 2008 at 12:38 am):
What is the milage on this automobile.
jose says (April 21, 2008 at 2:37 pm):
it's reallynice
Kathryn Burnett says (April 19, 2008 at 10:17 pm):
Sorry, Don't like!
John Finlay says (April 12, 2008 at 7:04 am):
